The Algarve
region is located in the south of Portugal. The scenic coastline
of the Algarve spans over 160 kilometres, home to the Atlantic Ocean
and many picturesque beaches
with large stretches of golden sand, many of which are Blue Flag
award holders.
With over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the Algarve attracts
thousands of tourists for all year round holidays either to the
beaches or to the many golf courses in this region, there are over
30 within a 15 kilometre radius of the coastline.
The Algarve is reached by flying into Faro airport, which is centrally
situated in the region. From most European capital cities the Algarve
can be reached in two to three hours.
For five centuries, Arabs occupied the Algarve. This influence
can still be seen in the regions architecture, the lattice chimneys
and tiles and resort names beginning with ‘Al’.
Popular activities in the Algarve include walking, surfing, golf,
tennis, horse riding, cycling and kayaking. There are many other
tourist attractions for families such as water parks, zoos, theme
parks and boat trips.
Many events take place in the Algarve throughout the year. These
vary from festivals, carnivals and sporting events. During the summer,
open air concerts, jazz festivals and beach parties take place in
various resorts.
Whatever you are looking for in a holiday, the Algarve has it
all!
